Coffee with Simpl Second Edition Recap

During the second Coffee with Simpl session, held on 4 June 2026, the discussion shifted from global context to programme execution, showcasing how Simpl is advancing within the broader European technological landscape.

The moderator opened the session with the fresh news released the day before, the adoption of  Tech Sovereignty package. The package presents a new approach of Europe’s tech ecosystems, interconnected and mutually reinforcing across each stage of the value chain, from chips, to infrastructure, to software, cloud and AI, and in synergy with past and ongoing initiatives such as AI Factories and AI Gigafactories. The accompanying EU Open-Source Strategy’s objective is to reduce dependencies across the entire technology stack.

Transitioning into the programme updates, a key focus of the session was the updated Simpl-Open roadmap and the upcoming release “Gdynia”. This release marks a significant step forward in platform maturity.

The roadmap items covered in the release reflect this evolution and include functionalities such as:

  • vocabulary management,

  • resource description for XFSC catalogue,

  • data orchestration and bulk data transfer,

  • monitoring of business events,

  • analytics and data processing,

  • infrastructure catalogue services,

  • and the introduction of a new landing page to improve user interaction and accessibility.

Still on Simpl-Open, the discussion also introduced initial Monetisation & Economic Sustainability concepts, framed within the development of the extensions, aimed at ensuring the long-term viability of data spaces. This is designed to support Governance Authorities through models such as subscription-based access, tiered services, onboarding fees, and transaction-based mechanisms. This approach enables structured economic interactions between participants while also addressing the operational costs of managing and governing data spaces, marking a shift towards more mature and sustainable ecosystems.

On Simpl-Labs side, it was the opportunity to remind the audience what it is,  a sandbox environment designed to support experimentation and adoption, allowing users to test Simpl-Open functionalities in a safe and controlled setting. By enabling hands-on interaction and early testing, Simpl-Labs aims to lower entry barriers and foster a broader and more engaged community. In parallel, Simpl-Live continues to drive implementation by integrating SimplOpen into operational European data spaces. The first wave of initiatives which will integrate Simpl includes the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC), the European Health Data Space of Secondary Data (EHDS2), the Language Data Space (LDS), Destination Earth (DestinE), the Smart Communities Data Space (SCDS), and the Public Procurement Data Space (PPDS).

The integration approach follows a structured and incremental methodology, currently including the preparatory analysis revisions with the definition of business processes, high-level requirements, and integration implementation roadmap, before moving to integrations development and maintenance.

Overall, the session highlighted a programme  moving from design to delivery across multiple fronts, strengthening its technical foundation, enabling experimentation, defining sustainability models, and advancing adoption, while emphasising the central role of the community in supporting Simpl’s long-term evolution.

The session also concluded with the announcement of the 3rd Simpl Annual Community Event, which will take place on 10 December 2026 in Brussels. The event will bring together the growing Simpl community for a day of exchange, collaboration, and inspiration, gathering both long-time contributors and new participants to help shape the future of data sharing in Europe. Further details, including agenda and speakers, will be shared in the coming months.
