Ecosystem

Simpl operates within a broad and collaborative ecosystem that shapes, supports, and enables trusted data sharing within Europe. It acts as an enabling element part of a larger landscape, spanning legislation, standards, communities, and (technical) initiatives.

The European data sharing ecosystem

Simpl exists within a diverse European environment shaped by legislative frameworks, standardisation efforts, open‑source communities, and sector specific data space initiatives. Each of these actors contributes with approaches, specifications, and tools that advance trusted and interoperable data sharing.

Rather than acting in isolation, Simpl actively aligns with established and emerging European expectations and participates in ongoing ecosystem dialogues. This ensures Simpl evolves coherently alongside broader European developments.

Standards and specifications Simpl aligns with

Simpl‑Open builds on widely recognised standards to ensure interoperability and trust. It leverages:

Coming soon: while DCAT (W3C) Open in New WIndow is not yet implemented, support for DCAT-AP is planned for future releases to enhance dataset cataloging.

Simpl in the European landscape

Europe’s data sharing landscape is built on a combination of policy, standards, and technical implementation. Simpl contributes directly at the technical layer while remaining aligned with broader European efforts.

Legislation, policy, and standardisation developments

Europe’s approach to data sharing is guided by the European Strategy for Data Open in New WIndow, the Data Union Strategy Open in New WIndow, and the AI Continent Action Plan Open in New WIndow, setting the vision for a single market for data across sectors and Member States.

Simpl is shaped by key EU legislation, including the Data Act Open in New WIndow, the Data Governance Act Open in New WIndow, and the AI Act Open in New WIndow, which set the conditions for secure, fair, and interoperable data use. In addition, the eIDAS2.0 regulation Open in New WIndow provides the European framework for trusted digital identity and trust services, which Simpl aligns with to ensure secure and interoperable digital identity and trust services.

Europe’s standardisation landscape is also evolving through the ongoing European Commission standardisation request on a European Trusted Data Framework Open in New WIndow, which has been accepted by CEN/CENELEC. The work is now underway in CEN‑CLC/JTC 25 “Data management, Dataspaces, Cloud and Edge Open in New WIndow, where experts are developing standards and technical specifications to support trusted and interoperable data sharing across European data spaces and initiatives.

These standards will define core expectations for trusted data sharing. Simpl monitors and aligns with this work so it can evolve consistently with the European Trusted Data Framework.

Common European Data Spaces (CEDS)

The European Commission supports numerous sectoral and cross‑domain data space projects through the Digital Europe Programme and Horizon Europe. These sectoral initiatives are the Common European Data Spaces (CEDS) Open in New WIndow spanning domains such as health, agriculture, energy, mobility, media, tourism, cultural heritage, finance, manufacturing, public administration, skills, research & innovation, and more.

Simpl, as an horizontal EU funded supporting programme, sits within this landscape and provides middleware that can be used by any of these initiatives. Their evolution can be explored through resources such as the DSSC’s Data Spaces Radar Open in New WIndow, which maps and provides insights on ongoing data space projects (publicly funded and private sector initiatives).

Simpl, the DSSC, and the Toolbox

The Data Spaces Support Centre (DSSC) Open in New WIndow supports the creation and deployment process of the Common European Data Spaces. It provides the blueprint, reference architecture, and governance guidelines for European data spaces. Simpl complements this work by offering an open-source modular middleware aligned with that blueprint, covering main functionalities data spaces and initiatives.

  • The DSSC defines the concepts and common foundations.
  • Simpl implements technical enablers that can be adopted where useful.

This is why Simpl is part of the Data Space Toolbox Open in New WIndow, alongside other building blocks that support the practical implementation of data spaces. It does not replace the Toolbox nor integrate every component within it—rather, it contributes reusable technologies that fit within the broader European approach.

The wider ecosystem around Simpl

Simpl is accompanied by a rich network of organisations and initiatives that contribute to the European data sharing vision. While Simpl and these organisations operate independently, we are part of the same environment and collaboration happens continuously through events, working groups, and alignment discussions.

These organisations play important roles in shaping governance models, semantic frameworks, reference architectures, and open-source tooling throughout Europe. Simpl actively engages with them to ensure the middleware remains adaptable and aligned with the wider ecosystem's evolution.
