Federation
Description
Federated systems describe autonomous entities, tied together by a specified set of standards, frameworks, and legal rules. Simpl-Open should federate data, infrastructure and applications. This principle is key to enable interoperability and information sharing among the different entities that will be part of Simpl-Open, while giving maximum autonomy to service owners.
Federation allows organizations to share resources (datasets, applications, infrastructure services) securely without centralizing them. This enables collaboration and innovation by providing access to diverse resources, while service providers keep autonomy over their resources. It also enhances security and data governance as the risk of security breaches and data loss is reduced.
Federation allows for decentralized control, where data and services can reside across multiple systems but are accessed as a unified whole. This ensures autonomy for individual entities while still enabling collaborative data use. Federation promotes data sharing between organizations and systems without centralizing control. It encourages collaboration without requiring complete integration of systems.
Risks:
- Complexity in managing multiple data sources and their corresponding metadata.
- Potential for data inconsistencies or conflicts across different systems / data fragmentation
- Security and access control challenges in a federated environment as each federated system may have its own policies and standards
