Simpl is advancing its work on the Common European Energy Data Space (CEEDS) by collaborating closely with key stakeholders, including INSIEME — the EU-funded project to connect, enhance, and streamline cross-border solutions and services at regional and EU-level into a CEEDS. Since April 2025, the Simpl-Live CEEDS Feasibility Study has been exploring how Simpl-Open will support secure, interoperable energy data exchange across the EU. A key milestone from this study was the Indicative Assessment Workshop, held on 27 June 2025, where stakeholders from across Europe gathered to assess CEEDS’ current maturity and identify Simpl-Open integration opportunities and challenges, paving the way for the integration of Simpl-Open into CEEDS.
Key insights from the Indicative Assessment Workshop
✅ 📍 Assessing the current state of CEEDS
The workshop addressed the increasing complexity of integrating data in multiple sectors and correlated domains such as automotive and heating, alongside upcoming regulatory changes. There was a shared understanding of the urgent need for a more integrated, efficient, and sovereign approach to managing and exchanging energy data across Europe. A key point raised was that rather than starting from scratch, INSIEME is leveraging existing technologies and infrastructure, ensuring faster progress while respecting the unique regulatory and technical environments of each Member State.
📊 Evaluating different maturity levels across EU countries and identifying challenges
The session also addressed the varying stages of readiness across European countries. While some are more advanced, there is a clear trend towards convergence, with many countries already testing or deploying shared tools that enable national systems to connect more seamlessly.
Also, some key challenges were mentioned; most notably the need for secure cross-border identity and access management, and the balance between privacy and actionable data insights. A noteworthy information is that CEEDS is not being built as a traditional data marketplace, but as a platform for real-time energy coordination and system security, crucial to Europe’s decarbonisation and digitalisation efforts.
🌍 Defining the vision for CEEDS & how can Simpl support it
The long-term vision is to build a federated, resilient, and innovation-friendly data space that supports energy consumers, accelerates decarbonisation, and strengthens digital sovereignty. Simpl-Open is expected to support this vision by offering a secure infrastructure for energy data exchange, along with tools and standards that facilitate interoperable and trustworthy collaboration across data ecosystems.
The Indicative Assessment Workshop was a crucial step in shaping the roadmap for Simpl-Open’s integration into CEEDS, helping to build a secure, scalable, and future-proof infrastructure for the European energy and data ecosystem. In the coming months, the Simpl-Live CEEDS Feasibility Study team will continue to work closely with stakeholders to consolidate the findings from the analysis and workshops – particularly the identified fits and gaps between Simpl-Open and CEEDS – into a robust fit-gap analysis that will serve as the foundation for defining reliable and actionable integration scenarios.
What’s next?
A Legal & Organisational Workshop is foreseen to take place in August 2025, focusing on CEEDS' governance, business processes, and regulatory frameworks, identifying fits and gaps with Simpl-Open. Insights from this session will be used to define the integration scenarios and develop the final Simpl-Live CEEDS Feasibility Study Report.
